Presidential Pottering

10 Jun 2015

Jane Ashe has been sailing to some Rival Rallies.....two in as many weeks!

First a blustery week on the west coast of Scotland, in Rival 38 Calico Martlet with David and Barbara Jones and my husband David.  We joined the Jones just after their spring launch at Loch Creran, and then cruised down gently south to  Puilladobhrain,  Craobh Haven, Jura and Gigha. Some sun, some showers, some hail, mostly good sailing breezes, and always cold! The scenery was magnificent, especially in the sun, and the wild flowers especially good.

We cruised back north, via Eilean Mor (the " Pirate Island"), to Loch Spelve on Mull. This is the home of a mussel farm, where we were able to buy several bags of mussels and paid £1 per kg into an honesty box as arranged. Kept them over the side or in a bucket for a couple of days till the Rally.  Then Loch Aline, where there is a smart small marina, and fantastic fossils on the beach. A lovely last day's sail took us to Tobermory, with the forecast looking nasty for the rest of the weekend.

Tucked up in the marina, we met up with three other Rivals, Perle, Flying Goose and Lasair, one of whom was press=ganged into joining the ROA, having been there by coincidence!

A very sociable shared meal followed with much laughter and many yarns.

Many thanks to David and Barbara for their hospitality and everyone else for their contributions to go with the mussel feast.

We flew back to Hampshire two days later, and after a short week back home, I was off to the Lymington  ROA Rally with Peter and Sue Middleton on Preshaw Dreamer. More blustery weather, but about 10degrees warmer! Preshaw Dreamer sailed like a Dream, and we were there in no time with a strong fair tide, despite the strong head winds and the skipper having a salty shower.

Lovely hospitality again (thanks to Peter Mills and Karen Brett) and a very nice meal in the Royal Lymington Yacht Club with excellent company!

Is there another rally next weekend? Can I come?
