Bilge pump setup

My bilge pump is mounted at the end of a Aluminium rod and pushed down behind the keel and under the prop shaft in that dark, low, oily, smelly and hard to access area. Of course it keeps failing and it never completely clears the water. Has anyone come up with a solution to clear all the water in there or a recommend pump/switch or sensor.
