Chartplotter or Computer

Posted: 24 Jul 2016 - By: Rog & Ali Thomson

We have been pondering whether to go chart plotter or computer for Southern Rival.  We already having a standalone radar, which we inherited with the boat and although old it works very well.  In the cockpit we have a Garmin GPSMap 276C running Bluechart, which can be mounted where the steering compass mounts; handy for pilotage and waterproof too. So, for the chart table area we opted to go the computer route.  We bought a Linx1010 windows tablet PC which is nice and compact and will mount on the chart table bulkhead.  It has a solid state drive and is perfect for running OpenCPN, on which we have a full set of Admiralty charts (raster).  We added a vYacht router, which takes GPS and AIS information from our Standard Horizon VHF and relays it by WiFi to the tablet PC.  Voila !  A fully fledged chart plotter with AIS and in independent radar (no single point of failure vulnerabilities across the nav system.  All done for a fraction of the cost of a chart plotter too.
