Rival 34 traveller

Posted: 24 Nov 2015 - By: David Mellor

We have just bought Soldemar as a family boat.  She is a Rival 34 and in very good condition generally.  However, the traveller is looking a bit "tired" and needs replacing.  It is an IYE type with a car but no "end control" pulleys or sheets - just simple pin stops either side of the car. It looks like the car has been pinned dead-centre for the past few years. In other words, the traveller hasn't been used as such and is about as effective as a central pad-eye.

The existing track seems very short to me - it is just 60 cm long, this being the width of the cockpit immediately adjacent to the companionway.  It would be possible to fit a longer track by running the new track from seat to seat.

So my questions are:

1. How useful (or otherwise) is a short traveller with just a pair of pinstops and no pulley/sheet control?

2. Is our arrangement unusual onRival 34s?  Or was it standard equipment?

3. What sort/type/make of traveller do other Rival 34 owners favour?  Do other owners like longer (than 60cm) tracks?

Thanks!

David Mellor
