Rudder hollow sound

Potential rudder problem
Posted: 21 Feb 2011 - By: Christopher Derrett
I recently purchased 1980 vintage Rival 34 "Hound".
My surveyor was very keen on his rubber mallet and gave the hull taps all over. He pronounced the hull sound, but drew my attention to the rudder, which did indeed respond with a hollow sound. This he said was an indication of possibly delamination possibly caused by corossion of metal internals. He advised that this at least needed monitoring and possibly investigation. There is no undue movement, evidence of water or other reason to doubt its integrity.
I wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences or has bright ideas for non destructive investigations, as the surveyors suggestion was to chop a hole in it and glass it back again if it looked OK.
